Old timer at the hardware store saved me from a plumbing disaster

I was standing in the plumbing aisle at Ace Hardware in Akron last summer, staring at two different sink drain kits for like 20 minutes. This older guy, maybe 70, comes up and asks what I'm working on. I tell him I'm replacing a bathroom sink trap and had no clue which one to grab. He just points at the cheaper one and says "that one will leak in 6 months, trust me." Then he showed me how the other one had a thicker gasket and a brass nut instead of plastic. He wasn't a worker there, just another customer who'd been fixing his own stuff for decades. I bought the pricier one and it's been solid ever since. Has anyone else had a random stranger save them from a bad buy at a store?

Wait, he wasn't even an employee there?

Oh man, that hits close to home. I've definitely shown up to a few "jobs" where my official title was more like "guy who hangs around and hopes for the best.
