My neighbor's advice to use duct tape on PVC pipe was a disaster

Honestly, my neighbor Bob told me to just wrap some duct tape around a cracked PVC drain pipe under my sink as a quick fix. Said he'd done it a dozen times and it held for months. Well, it lasted about 4 hours before it blew off and flooded my cabinet, soaking about $30 worth of cleaning supplies. Had to cut out the section and replace it with a proper coupling anyway. Anyone else had a supposedly "pro tip" from a neighbor go sideways like that?

Would push back here because Bob's advice actually works fine if you wrap the tape tight and give it some overlap. I've used duct tape on PVC for a temporary fix and it held for a week before I got around to replacing the fitting. Sounds like you maybe didn't rough up the pipe surface first so the tape had nothing to grip.
