Vent: Too many people skip the spine glue step

I keep seeing rebinds on here where folks glue straight to the cover without checking the old spine first. I did that with a 1962 copy of The Hobbit from my local Goodwill in Portland, and the pages split clean off after about a month. The old adhesive has to be scraped down flat, no exceptions. Anyone else run into this with older mass market paperbacks?
