The hand cream stain that made my book smell like a florist for a month

So I was rebinding a 1968 hardcover I found at a garage sale in Dayton, and I thought I was being clever by using scented hand cream to keep my fingers smooth while I worked the spine. Big mistake. That stuff soaked right into the endpapers before I even noticed, and now this copy of a boring astronomy textbook smells like a department store exploded on it. My wife won't even sit near my desk when I'm drying the glue now. I tried baking soda, putting it in a bag with cat litter, even leaving it on the porch for a week. Nothing gets that floral smell out. Has anyone else accidentally introduced a smell they can't kill, and did you find a fix that actually works or did you just learn to live with it?

Try activated charcoal packets in a sealed bin, that works better than baking soda.
