That librarian's tip about heat guns saved my warped cover

A few months back I was at a library book sale and this older librarian saw me eyeing a stack of warped hardcovers. She told me to stop wasting money on new books and use a heat gun on low, like 200 degrees, to gently soften the glue and press the cover flat. I tried it on a thrifted copy that had been bent in a backpack for years and it honestly worked better than any heavy stack of dictionaries I've used. The trick is to move the gun in circles and never stop in one spot, otherwise you'll blister the laminate like I did on my first try. It took about 10 minutes per cover and the spine stayed totally intact. Anyone else had luck fixing bowed covers with heat or do you swear by the damp towel method?
