Staining pages with coffee turned my paperback into a journal

I took an old copy of a mystery novel that had a boring white page edge and stained all the pages with instant coffee, about 2 tablespoons in a cup of hot water. Brushed it on each page edge with a foam brush, let it dry overnight, then repeated once. The edges came out this nice aged tan color, looks like a century old book now. Did it last Saturday, and the curl on the pages settled after 3 days. Anyone else use tea or coffee for that worn look, or do you stick to edge painting?
