Regret burning $60 on a leather 'repair' kit for a rebind

Last month I tried to fix a cracked spine on a vintage hardcover using this $60 leather repair kit from a craft store. The goop turned a weird gray color and peeled off like old nail polish after 3 days. I lost the original cover texture and ended up having to strip the whole thing down to boards. Would a proper bookcloth hinge have held up better, or is there a trick with acrylic paint I'm missing?
