My $30 craft knife just destroyed a painted book cover

Tbh I was all excited to try hand painting a cover on an old hardback, so I picked up those cheap blades from the craft aisle. Halfway through cutting a stencil, the blade snapped and dragged a huge gouge right across the front. Honestly it was my own fault, I was pressing way too hard and angling it like a dremel. I ended up sanding the whole cover down and going with a layered paper collage instead, which took 3 hours but looked way better. Has anyone else had a tool fail mid-project and have to completely pivot your plan?
