I finally tried painting book edges with acrylics and honestly it was a mess

Was it really a mess, or did you just expect the paint to behave differently than it does? Acrylics need a light touch and a dry brush, and most people use way too much paint at first, so it bleeds and smears everywhere. Once you thin it out and do a couple of test passes on scrap paper, the edges come out surprisingly clean, it just takes a little patience.
