Bought a 'global' SIM card in Bangkok, lost 80 bucks before I even left the shop
I paid 80 dollars for a SIM that supposedly worked in 40 countries, but it only activated in Thailand and needed top-ups every few days to keep the data flowing. The shop guy said 'just register online later' but the website never accepted my passport scan. Has anyone else gotten burned by these airport SIM stands, or am I just unlucky with my pick?

The passport scan thing is a known scam with those tourist SIMs. They take your money, hand you a card, and the online registration is either fake or broken on purpose so you have to go back to their shop and pay them to "fix" it. My buddy went through the same thing in Phuket last year, ended up paying almost double what he planned because every few days the data would cut off and the only way to top up was through the original seller. Next time try buying from an actual carrier store like AIS or True, not the little stands in the airport. Costs a bit less upfront and they don't play games with the activation.
