Last night I compared two different brush textures for my digital landscape and one was way better
I was working on a sunset over a lake scene in Procreate and kept switching between the standard round brush and a custom chalk brush I found online. The chalk brush gave the clouds this gorgeous soft grain that made them feel real, while the round brush just looked flat even after I messed with opacity. Has anyone else found that a specific brush texture totally changes how your layers blend together?

The chalk brush really does change things... I tried a similar setup once and noticed the standard round brush just doesnt give you that texture depth no matter how much you tweak. The chalk brush catches the edges of the clouds differently, like it lifts some of the pigment away. But I think you might be giving it a little too much credit for making things "real" - its really just mimicking the random pitting of pastel paper. The round brush can actually blend layers smoother if you use the wet smear tool after your base strokes. I usually start with chalk for texture then go back with a soft round brush to pull the colors together... helps the lake reflection look less grainy.
