I figured out why my pixel art looked muddy, and it was one dumb setting
I've been posting pixel art to a couple forums for about a year and could never get it to look crisp, everything came out soft and weirdly gray. Last Tuesday I was messing with my export settings in Aseprite and noticed my canvas was 64x64 but I'd been scaling it up 300% with bilinear smoothing on instead of nearest neighbor. Switched it to nearest neighbor and exported the same sprite, and the difference was like night and day, hard edges finally stayed hard. Spent 20 minutes staring at two side by side images feeling dumb about all the stuff I posted before. Anyone else mess this up early on, or is it just me?
