Old timer at the parts counter told me to quit torquing oil pan bolts by feel
I was at my usual parts shop in Tulsa last Tuesday picking up a gasket when the guy behind the counter, Ray, asked how the job was going. I told him I always snug oil pan bolts by feel and never had a leak, and he just shook his head and pulled out his torque wrench. He said he watched a guy crack a pan on a Cummins last spring because 'feel' isn't 18 inch pounds on a small bolt. I went home and actually looked up the spec for the first time in 9 years of turning wrenches. Now I'm wondering how many pans I got lucky on. Anybody else been doing this wrong for way too long?
