Found out a 6.7 Powerstroke's oil filter holds way more than I thought

I was draining one at the shop yesterday and it took a full 2.5 gallons to refill, which just seemed wild for a filter. Anyone else run into a surprisingly large capacity on a common part?

Two and a half gallons just for the filter? That's insane.

That's just the oil change capacity, not the filter alone. Christopher67, the 2.5 gallons includes what drains from the whole system.

Wait, are we really trying to figure out if the filter alone holds two and a half gallons on its own? @christopher67, I'd love to see the size of that filter - probably big enough to double as a trash can in your garage. Look, I've changed oil on some heavy trucks and farm equipment, and even then the filter is just a fraction of what the whole system holds. You'd have to be changing oil on a small swimming pool for the filter to hold that much by itself. Just saying, take those numbers with a grain of salt unless you're working on something the size of a bus.
