Bought a $220 infrared temp gun over a $40 one, and it paid for itself in one week
I used to check exhaust temps by touch on the manifold like an idiot, and I got burned twice on jobs I thought were fine. A guy at a shop in Tulsa talked me into the cheap one first, but it drifted 30 degrees high after about 6 months, which had me chasing a fuel issue that wasn't there. I finally dropped $220 on a decent IR gun with a laser and a tighter reading range, and within one week it caught a bad injector running 180 degrees hotter than the other five on a Cummins. The cheap one would have read that as normal all day long and I would have sent the truck out to cook itself. If you're still guessing on temps, spend the money on a good gun, it's way cheaper than a rebuild. What temp spread do you guys call it on before you pull an injector?
180 is huge, on a 5.9 Cummins I usually start pulling at around 80 to 100 over the average, anything past that and you are just begging for a melted piston. The real trick is catching it early, so I shoot all six at the same spot on the manifold right after a hard pull and compare, since a dirty sensor or a bad wire will lie to you way before the injector does. A $40 gun that drifts is worse than no gun at all, because it makes you trust a number that is flat wrong.
