The Tuesday morning my local mall had a 30-minute rush of real shoppers before the food court went silent again

I was there grabbing a pretzel around 10 AM last month and suddenly the place had actual families with shopping bags and laughing kids for half an hour, then by 10:35 it was dead quiet except for one janitor mopping and I swear that short burst of normal felt more depressing than the usual emptiness because it showed what used to be, has anyone else caught a weird busy moment in a near empty mall?

Malls are dying, but I'm not sure a short burst of families counts as a sign of the apocalypse. You're reading a lot into a pretzel run. Maybe there was a school field trip or a senior citizen bus drop-off. Could be someone won a gift card in a raffle. I've seen worse things than a quiet food court, like a mall that still has a Spencer Gifts but no Hot Dog on a Stick. It's just Tuesday.
