I counted 23 dead mall visits before I realized they all died the same year
Started keeping a list of every dead mall I've walked since 2021. Hit 23 last weekend at Rolling Acres in Akron and that's when the pattern jumped out at me. 14 of them have anchor stores that shut down between 2007 and 2009. Not random. Same 3 year window over and over. I went back through my photos and the Sears or Macy's signs are still up in almost every one. Feels like I've been documenting the same funeral in different buildings. Anyone else notice a cluster like that in their own list, or is this just an Ohio thing?
Were those Sears closings all part of that big wave when the company got bought out? I remember reading that a ton of them shut down around then. Same with Macy's cutting stores after the 2008 crash. So yeah, it's probably not just Ohio, that was a rough few years for anchors everywhere.
