Took me 11 hours to get a Zip disk readable on my old Power Mac and the fix was a piece of tape
I have a Bondi blue iMac G3 that I use just for old ClarisWorks files, and a friend handed me a stack of Zip disks from her art school days in Chicago. One disk kept giving me the click of death, so I assumed it was gone and I spent a full Saturday night reinstalling drivers on System 9. I tried three different external Zip drives, cleaned the heads with a kit from eBay, and even dug out an old SCSI adapter to rule out the USB bridge. After about 11 hours I read an old forum post from 2001 that said sometimes the metal shutter gets bent and a strip of scotch tape on the edge holds it flat enough to read. It worked on the first try, and I felt like a genius and an idiot at the same time. Does anyone here keep a dead drive around just for parts, or am I the only one hoarding this stuff?
Oh man, same thing happened to me with a stack of old Iomega disks from a guy on Craigslist. Spent way too long blaming the drive when it was just a bent shutter the whole time. You are definitely not the only one hoarding dead drives, I have a whole shelf of them because you never know when you need one part.
