That $40 VGA switch box from 2003 finally bit me hard

I dug my old beige VGA switch box out of storage last month to hook up my retro PC and a modern laptop to my new monitor. Spent $40 on it back in high school, thought it would just work like it always did. Turns out the connector pins are worn down and now the whole signal flickers on the right side every time I switch inputs. I saved $80 on a cheap modern KVM and it does the same thing, so now I'm wondering if I should just go direct cable or look for a refurbished one from a real brand. Anyone else hit a wall with legacy video gear that worked for decades and then gave up in one week?
