I finally got my wake-up call about old laptop batteries from my IT guy

I was bragging to my friend Dave about my 2012 ThinkPad still running. He works IT. He asked when I last checked the battery. I said 'never'. He showed me a photo of a swollen battery that cracked a trackpad. I went home and popped mine open. It was bulging. That conversation three weeks ago made me replace it same day. Anyone else ignore their old gear batteries until it's almost too late?

Nah, I gotta disagree with you here. I've been running a 2015 MacBook Pro for years and the battery is still going strong. I check it every six months or so and it's always fine. Not every old laptop is a ticking time bomb, some brands just build better batteries. Your IT guy probably only sees the worst cases because people bring him their broken stuff. Plenty of us are doing fine with our old gear.

Yo @felixb25, your luck is solid but that's a gamble I wouldn't take. Swollen batteries don't send a warning text.
