That time a customer tried to pay with a drawing of a credit card

I was working the register at a grocery store in Toledo when a kid, maybe 7 years old, handed me a crayon drawing of a credit card to pay for his candy bar. He was totally serious. I had to explain to him it wouldn't work, but I gave him the candy anyway because it was just too funny. What's the weirdest 'payment' you've ever been offered?

That's a great story, and it was nice of you to give him the candy. I worked at a gas station in Dayton for a few years. Did the kid's parent ever come over and settle up, or did he just wander up to your register alone with his drawing?

Actually, maybe the parent was right there watching the whole time and just letting the kid learn. Simonm67, you worked at a gas station, so you know how many parents send their kid up to the counter alone with a few dollars for a soda. It's not always being careless, sometimes it's teaching them to be brave. That drawing was probably the kid's own idea to pay, which is pretty creative for a little one. Why assume the worst when it could just be a small lesson in being independent?

Oh man, that's a sweet story. I've had a kid try to pay with a handful of bottle caps before. Honestly, I just took them and gave him the pack of gum. It's a couple bucks and makes their whole day. The parent usually shows up right after, a little embarrassed, and pays for it. Letting a kid try to pay on their own is a good little lesson, even if their money is all wrong.
