Update: I was setting my outriggers on soft ground wrong for a decade

I was on a site in Mobile last month, same old routine with the mats on what looked like decent dirt. My rigger, a guy named Carl who's been at it for 40 years, just shook his head and said 'You're trusting that top layer way too much, son.' He made me dig a test hole next to the pad. Six inches down it was pure, wet clay. I'd been judging ground stability by surface look for years, never checking what was underneath. Now I carry a soil probe and check a foot down every single time, no exceptions. How many of you actually test the subsoil before you set up, or do you just go by the surface?

Classic case of trusting the pretty topsoil.
