Overheard a safety inspector say most crane accidents happen in the first 15 minutes of a shift

Was getting coffee at the dispatch office Tuesday morning and heard this OSHA guy talking to another operator. He said they looked at 5 years of data and something like 60% of incidents happen right after the morning huddle when guys are rushing to get the first lift done. Made me think about how I always take my time setting up but maybe I need to slow down even more on that first pick of the day. Any of you guys change your routine after hearing something like that?

Wow, that's actually really interesting and scary at the same time. I think the pressure to get that first lift done fast is real because everyone's watching and waiting. But rushing is exactly how you miss something simple like a loose pin or a bad sling angle. Why wouldn't you just take the extra two minutes to be sure, you know? Maybe we all need to treat that first pick like it's the most dangerous one of the whole day, because apparently it is.

What worked for me was getting the crew to take a quick walkaround together before the first lift. Just those extra 60 seconds of everyone eyeballing things caught a loose shackle pin once, saved us from a bad morning.
