Can we talk about the kid at the Gamestop in Boise who called Stardew his 'homework game'?
He was 11, buying it with birthday money, and when his mom asked why he did not want the new shooting game he said, 'Because Stardew is the one I play when I get home and I am already tired,' and I think about that a lot when people ask why these games matter.
The part that gets me is when he said he plays it when he is already tired. What does it say about being 11 in 2024 that a kid already knows what that feels like? Like, where did he pick that up from, his own life or the adults around him? And why is unwinding automatically a game with guns for so many people, but a game about growing turnips is the weird choice? A kid that age usually just wants whatever is loudest, so what made him pick the quiet one instead?
