The scalp massage advice from my first mentor cost me a client in Phoenix
My first mentor in beauty school told me to always do a 5 minute scalp massage before every color service because clients love it and it builds loyalty. I did that for 3 months straight at my first salon in Phoenix, until a regular named Dana asked me to skip it because it made her dizzy. Turns out she had vertigo and the pressure on her neck was making it worse, and she stopped booking with me for 6 weeks. My mentor never asked about health issues, she just assumed everyone wants the same thing. Now I ask every new client 3 quick questions before I touch their head. Does your salon teach scalp massage as a default step, or do you check with the client first?
