Lost $4k on a subcontractor who ghosted us mid-hookup

I'm posting this so nobody else falls for the same trap. Back in March, we hired a plumbing sub for a 12-unit remodel in Austin based on a buddy's referral and a great bid. Paid him $4,000 upfront for materials, he showed up two days, then vanished with zero calls returned. The general contractor had to eat the delay and we covered the supply house bill twice because his name was on the order. Has anyone else dealt with a sub who took a deposit and disappeared, and how do you vet references now without getting burned again?
