Used to read every page of a 9/11 thread, now I quit a debate the second someone says "do your own research"
I spent most of 2016 to 2019 reading long forum threads about moon landing stuff, sometimes 60 pages deep, taking notes and everything. A thread about the Pentagon would eat up 3 hours of my evening and I loved it. Now I close the tab in under a minute if the other person's only move is telling me to look it up myself. That phrase is just a wall, it does not move any debate forward. Last week a guy dropped it on me in a thread about the JFK files after 2 replies and I was gone. I still like the debates, I just want ones where people bring facts instead of homework. Does anyone know a board where that rule actually gets enforced?
The Straight Dope forums are still pretty good about that, mods shut down "do your own research" stuff fast in Great Debates. Reddit's r/AskHistorians is even stricter but you can't really argue there, just ask. Honestly I just bookmark good sources and paste them when someone tries that move on me.
