Spent 6 months using the wrong grip on my camera before a random guy at a coffee shop set me straight

So I got into astrophotography (you know, trying to get decent shots of the moon and some constellations) back in January. I was using this cheap tripod I got for $30 on Amazon, and every single time I tried to adjust the ball head, it would slowly sag after a few seconds. I thought that's just how cheap tripods work, right? I was at a Denny's in Phoenix around 2 AM after a night shoot, and this older guy sitting next to me asks about my setup. He takes one look at how I'm tightening the knob and laughs, saying I'm using the wrong locking mechanism for vertical shots. Turns out I was supposed to tighten a different ring first, then the main knob. 6 months of blurry photos over something that simple. Has anyone else had a pro tip from a complete stranger that changed everything?

Calling BS on this whole "stranger saves the day" narrative. People love making themselves look like clueless newbies for a story. You really spent 6 months not reading the manual or watching a single YouTube tutorial? That's on you, not lack of coffee shop mentors. Most common gear problems have obvious fixes if you actually troubleshoot instead of just blaming the tripod. Also, who's gonna believe you got 6 months of results without ever wondering why everything was soft? You probably didn't even check your photos until some random guy pointed it out. Convenient how this magical expert just happened to be at Denny's at 2 AM. Sounds like a made up story to get sympathy clicks.
