Why does nobody talk about letting the mud set before you touch a float edge?
Last month I was finishing a 40 by 60 slab out in Fresno and rushing the edges like always, trying to get the float on before the bleed water dried. A finisher with about 25 years on me watched for a minute and asked if I was in a race, then said flat out that I was tearing the edge every pass. I slowed down, let the concrete sit a few extra minutes, and ran my float with the leading edge up instead of digging in. Same slab, same mix, but the edge came out clean with maybe a quarter of the touch-up work. What do you all look for to know the mud is ready for that first float pass?
