We poured a 30x40 shop slab outside College Station last Friday and my helper grabbed the mag float for the first pass while I was setting up the power trowel. I switched him to the 4 foot wood float for cutting and the low spots basically vanished before we ever fired up the machine. Anyone else find the wood float is still the real MVP on big pours or am I just old school?
The wood float works because it rides on the cream and bridges the low spots instead of digging into them like the mag does, so you're basically cutting the high stuff while the low stuff fills in behind you. That's why the floor looks flat before you even touch a trowel, and on a 30x40 you've got enough time to let that happen. People forget the float pass is really about moving mud around, not just smoothing the top.
