I finally ditched the rake for a hand float on small slabs, and my edges got way cleaner
For years on anything under a couple hundred square feet I would just drag a rake across it and call it good, then fight the edge the whole time with a trowel. Last week I did a 12 by 14 shed pad out in Garfield and my buddy told me to try floating the whole thing with a hand float before I ever touched it with the steel. I figured it would take forever, but it honestly only cost me about 15 extra minutes and the cream came up so much nicer and more even. The corners stopped tearing out on me and I didn't have a single low spot where the rake skipped. Now I keep a magnesium float within arm's reach on every pour no matter how small. When did you all stop reaching for the rake first, or do some of you still swear by it on little jobs like that?
