Used to clone every drive with dd, now I charge $150 more because of one batch file
I spent a decade typing dd commands by hand and sweating every byte, then I finally wrote a little script that checks SMART data first and refuses to touch a dying drive. Anyone else got a tiny tool that accidentally turned into a paid service?
The SMART check idea could go even further if you log the results somewhere. I started keeping a little text file of every drive I test, just the model, hours, and reallocated sector count, and after a few months I could actually see which brands were dying early. Sold that info to a couple repair shops in town as a monthly email, like 40 bucks a pop, and they ate it up because they were guessing before. Your mileage may vary depending on your market, but the data pile is basically free once the script is running. The script was the easy part, the paper trail is what people pay for.
