Update: Thought a RAM reseat would fix everything
Tried reseating the memory on a customer's rig that kept crashing. Now it won't even power on, and I'm stuck figuring out if I zapped something. Any tips for avoiding this kind of fail?

Nah, static killing parts is super overblown. I've done tons of RAM swaps on carpet in socks, never lost a board. You probably just didn't seat it all the way. That last bit of pressure is scary, but it needs to click. Double check the power cables too, maybe one got loose.

Once static electricity turned a simple fix into a full motherboard replacement.

Ouch, that's rough! My friend zapped his motherboard with static while just cleaning his PC. He had to replace the whole board instead of a simple dusting job.
