I used to think those cheap USB data recovery sticks were a total scam until one actually saved a client's wedding photos from a dead laptop last week.
The drive had completely failed to spin up, but the stick's utility managed to pull the data directly from the platters after I connected it via the diagnostic port, which I learned from a forum post by a tech in Boise about 6 months ago.

Man, that line about saving the wedding photos really hits home... I've had that awful feeling when a client is about to lose something priceless. Those little USB tools get a bad rap, but when they work, it's pure relief. It's amazing what you can find out from a random forum post by someone across the country. Just goes to show you should never write off a tool completely. Really glad you got those photos back for them.

Totally get that. Had a dead external drive last month, client's whole music project was on it. The drive just clicked, you know? Found a YouTube video from a guy in Texas showing how to tap the board to get it spinning long enough to copy the data. Felt like a miracle. Those weird tricks are lifesavers.
