Fell for a $200 data recovery scam last month
My external drive crapped out and I panicked. Found this place online called QuickByte Recovery in Portland, they promised a 90% success rate. Paid them $200 upfront and all they did was run some free software I could have downloaded myself. Has anyone else gotten burned by those emergency data recovery shops?

Most of those places are just running automated tools and charging a premium. If you really need data recovery, find someone local with a clean room and years of experience.
