Wrote off that $3 harbor freight pick as junk, then it saved my butt on a 40 foot mudline job in Galveston
I have always been the guy who spends real money on tools because cheap stuff fails when it matters. So when a tender handed me this little $3 pick from Harbor Freight, I laughed and shoved it in my bag mostly to shut him up. Fast forward to a job in Galveston two months back, 40 feet down on a mudline inspection, and my main knife got wedged so bad I could not free it with gloves on. I grabbed that cheap pick as a last resort and it dug through packed shell and clay like nothing, popped the tangle loose in maybe 30 seconds. I used it the rest of the hitch, cleaned it, and it still sits in my bag today with barely a scratch on the tip. Now I am sitting here wondering if I have been overpaying for half my kit this whole time. Any of you got a cheap tool that outperformed the price tag on a real job?
So a three dollar pick just dunked on your whole tool budget. That is a rough day for the wallet. Funny how the stuff we baby and oil never pulls its weight and the junk from the bargain bin saves the hitch. My rule now is buy cheap first and only upgrade once the cheap one breaks, which so far has saved me more money than it has cost me.
