Scuba bottle bands from the 80s had thicker rubber

Been seeing guys slap new cylinder bands on old tanks without checking the strap groove, and after two bottles slipped on a dive boat off Key Largo in March, I pulled out a band from 1984 that was twice as thick, so is anyone else sizing down instead of swapping to those skinny new ones?

Man, I gotta disagree with you there. Those old thick bands were a pain to get seated right, and Ive seen more corrosion issues under em than the skinny ones. The new bands hold fine if you actually check the groove and replace em when theyre shot.
