PSA: Don't drop $80 on that 'rare' variant just because the cover looks cool
I bought a Spider-Man #1 variant from 2023 for $80 at a con last month. Thought it was a steal. Got it home and saw the exact same cover on a regular issue for $4.99 at my local shop. The only difference was a foil logo. Now it's sitting in a bag and board collecting dust. Anyone else get tricked by a fancy cover that turned out to be a dud?

Used to think fancy covers were the whole point of collecting honestly. But after buying a few of those foil variants myself and watching them sit untouched in boxes I totally get it now. The hype makes you feel like you're getting something special until you realize the regular edition tells the same story for way less. Now I only grab a variant if I really love the art or it's from an artist I follow. That $80 could have gotten you a solid older key issue instead, which is what I wish someone told me a year ago. Lesson learned the hard way for sure.

Gotta disagree a bit. Those foil variants are a fun way to celebrate a book you love and the resale market is starting to wake up on some of them. If you actually enjoy looking at the cover that's worth something too.
