Noticed way more people cosplaying as niche indie comic characters at Detroit Fan Expo this year compared to 2022

I swear back then it was all Batman and Spider-Man, but this time I counted like 15 different characters from stuff like Monstress and Saga, and the cosplay quality was insane because of YouTube tutorials making advanced techniques super accessible to everyone now, has anyone else seen this shift at their local cons?

Yeah, that bit about YouTube tutorials making advanced techniques accessible really rings true. I've been seeing the same thing outside of cons too, like at this local craft fair I went to last month. Half the people selling stuff were using resin and 3D printing in ways that would have taken years to learn five years ago, but now there's a video for everything. Idk, it feels like the barrier to making high quality stuff is just gone for a lot of people, not just in cosplay but in like, painting and prop building too.

The YouTube tutorial thing is legit, I learned how to make foam armor in a weekend from some guy in his garage and it actually turned out decent. It's wild how the knowledge is just out there for free now instead of being locked behind expensive workshops or years of trial and error. Good for the people who actually want to make stuff but couldn't afford the old school way.
