My coworker keeps calling 'Watchmen' a superhero story and it drives me nuts

A guy in my office two floors up insists that Watchmen is just another superhero comic. He says things like 'it deconstructs the genre' but at the end of the day it still has capes and masks. I tried explaining that Alan Moore wrote it specifically to show how messed up real people with powers would be, not to celebrate heroes. He pointed to Rorschach and said 'see, he fights crime like Batman.' I bring a trade paperback to lunch once a week and he still doesn't get it. Has anyone else run into someone who completely misses the point of a classic book like this?

Next he'll be telling us The Dark Knight Returns is just a nice story about a guy who likes dressing up as a bat and punching clowns. By that logic, 1984 is just a romance novel since it has two people who kind of like each other in it. Some people REALLY want things to be simple, huh.

Got a buddy who tried to convince me Taxi Driver is just a movie about a guy who drives people around and has trouble sleeping. Almost fell out of my chair laughing.
