A guy at a shop in Portland sold me a beat up copy of X-Men #1 and it changed how I hunt back issues
Two months ago I drove up to Portland for a small comic show at a hotel near the airport, mostly just to dig through dollar bins and kill a Saturday. Halfway through I got to this older guy's table and he had a rough copy of X-Men #1 sitting there, cover half hanging off and a coffee ring on the back. He wanted $40 for it and I almost walked away because it looked like trash, but he told me he'd rather sell a reader copy to somebody who would actually read it than slab it and let it sit in a box forever. I bought it, took it home, and read the whole thing that night with tape on the spine and everything. Now I look for beat up keys on purpose because I actually read them instead of staring at them through plastic. My LCS guy thinks I'm nuts for passing on a graded 9.4 last month to buy three rough silver age books instead. Has anyone else flipped to buying reader copies over slabs, or am I the only one doing this?
