I finally stopped buying whole beans from that craft roaster on 7th Street
For about 2 years I was going to this small place downtown called Red Kettle Roasters. Paid $18 for a 12 ounce bag every week. Their single origin stuff tasted great but the freshness was all over the place. One morning last month I opened a bag I bought just 3 days earlier and the beans looked oily and smelled sour. I took them back and the guy behind the counter shrugged and said that batch was roasted 2 weeks ago. That was the last straw. Now I just buy generic medium roast whole beans from the grocery store for $9 a bag and they taste fine. Has anyone else had a local roaster drop the ball on freshness like that?

That batch was roasted 2 weeks ago" is basically the same thing that happened to my friend Dave. He used to go to this place called Blue Door Roasters over on the east side. Bought a bag of their Ethiopian, opened it up the next day and it was like dusty and flat. He took it back and the owner told him they had a new roaster guy who was messing up the schedule. Dave said the owner didn't even offer him a replacement bag, just said sorry. He switched to buying Peet's from the store and hasn't looked back.

Not quite right" - actually, Peet's doesn't roast their own beans locally, so the bags you buy in the store are usually weeks old too...
