Dropped $180 on a hand grinder and my $60 drip machine suddenly tastes worth drinking
Honestly I always thought people who spent that much on a grinder were showing off, but my old $25 blade grinder was turning my beans into powder and dust. Switched to a 1Zpresso JX last month and the same bag of beans from the shop on 5th Ave tastes totally different, way sweeter and less bitter. Tbh I feel dumb for buying cheap gear for so long and blaming the beans. Has anyone gone from a blade grinder to a hand grinder and noticed a jump this big, or am I just fooling myself?
This is the same thing that happens with knives, speakers, bikes, basically anything with moving parts. People buy the cheapest version, it does a bad job, and they blame themselves or the material instead of the tool. You didn't get fooled by fancy marketing, you just fixed the weak link in the chain. A grinder is doing the actual work, so the gap between a $25 blade and a burr grinder is going to be way bigger than the gap between a $60 drip machine and a $200 one.
