The one piece of advice from a random guy at a coffee shop in Austin that actually made coding click for me
About 6 months ago I was stuck on a really basic JavaScript function, like embarrassingly basic, and this guy at a coffee shop on South Congress saw my screen and asked what I was working on. I said I was learning to code and he just said "close the tutorial and try to build the dumbest version of it first, then look stuff up when you get stuck." I sat there kind of annoyed because every course I paid for told me to follow along step by step. But I went home and tried it, just opened a blank file and wrote a broken calculator with like 4 lines, and it took me 2 hours to get working. Those 2 hours taught me more than 3 weeks of videos. I think the reason it worked is I had to actually ask myself what each line was doing instead of just copying. Has anyone else had a stranger give them better advice than an actual course?
