Tried a new CAM software trial on a 10 year old Haas and it crashed hard

Downloaded a trial of Fusion 360 to see what all the hype was about. First post, toolpath looked fine on screen but it tried to plunge a 1/2 endmill straight through a vise jaw. Learned to stick with my old Mastercam for now, but has anyone else had luck running newer CAM on older machines without issues?

Did you check if the trial had the proper post processor for a Haas? I've seen guys blame the software when it's really the post that's messing everything up. That plunge would scare me straight too, but sometimes it's a simple setting like leaving safe retracts on or picking the right tool orientation. A 10 year old machine should handle Fusion fine as long as you're not asking it to do 5 axis stuff it wasn't built for. Maybe try running the simulation with the actual machine model and slow it down before you trust the default toolpath.

Had a buddy swear up and down Fusion was crashing his old machine, turned out he was using the wrong post for like two weeks straight. He just sat there watching it do this wild plunge move on the sim and thought it was a software glitch. Once he swapped to the right Haas post it ran smooth as butter, no more heart attacks.
