Watched a sunset from the top of Clingmans Dome in Tennessee and it finally got me to start carrying a real camera
My wife and I drove up to Clingmans Dome in the Smokies about 3 weeks ago, mostly just to kill time before dinner in Gatlinburg. We got up to the overlook around 7pm and the sky was absolutely insane, these flat pancake layers stacked up with orange light bleeding through the gaps. I only had my phone and I tried to get a shot but it came out as a blurry mess that looked nothing like what I was seeing. There was a guy up there with an actual camera on a little tripod and he showed me his screen, and the detail in those pancake clouds was unreal, you could see every little ripple in the layers. I went home and dug out my dad's old Canon from a closet and I have been shooting clouds on my lunch break ever since. Still learning all the settings but I already got one shot of some lenticular clouds over the ridge near my house that came out way better than my phone ever managed. Does anyone here shoot pancake or lenticular clouds and have tips for catching the layers without blowing out the bright parts?
