I finally figured out why my lenticular cloud photos were always blurry

I kept trying to shoot lenticular clouds over Mount Rainier but they always came out soft. After 6 tries I realized my autofocus was locking onto the mountain, not the cloud. Switched to manual focus at infinity and last week I finally got a sharp shot. Has anyone else had trouble with camera autofocus on high altitude clouds?

Infinity is infinity, thin air shouldn't change how a lens focuses.

Hold up, wait - when you switched to manual focus at infinity, did you have to adjust it at all from the hard stop? I've heard some lenses actually go past true infinity and you have to back it off just a hair for clouds, especially at higher altitudes where the air is thinner. I'm wondering if that's why my attempts at shooting these things over the Cascades keep coming out slightly off even when I think I'm locked in. Like maybe the lens is focusing past where it should be because of the cold or something?
