Vent: My compost pile in the backyard turned into a methane factory
I tried a new layered method with a lot of kitchen scraps and yard waste, but after two weeks it smelled awful and felt hot in a bad way. I learned I didn't add enough dry brown material like leaves, so it went anaerobic instead of breaking down right. Has anyone else in a humid area fixed a stinky, slimy compost batch?

My neighbor's compost bin caught fire once from getting too hot. He had to hose it down in the middle of the night. Sometimes you just have to start over with more cardboard and leaves.

My uncle in Florida swears by adding a bag of cheap potting soil to wet compost, it soaks up the mess and adds microbes. Makes me think @elliotw37's neighbor could have used that instead of a midnight hose down.
