Is carbon offsetting actually doing anything or just making us feel better?

I just read that a company I use bought offsets for $2 per ton, but actual carbon capture costs around $100 per ton. How do we know if these programs are real solutions or just greenwashing?

$2 a ton offsets are basically just buying a sticker, not capturing anything real.

Yeah "buying a sticker" is exactly how I'd put it. At that price point you're basically paying for a feel good receipt not any real carbon capture. It's like trying to lose weight by buying a smaller shirt.
