Showerthought: the guy at the Rocky River dock told me I was rigging my bait wrong 12 summers ago and I still think about it
I was maybe 19 and fishing off the wall near the Rocky River reservation, just drowning worms like I always did, when this older guy in a beat up Indians hat watched me for a bit and finally said "you're threading it backwards, that worm's gonna spin right off." He didn't say it in a mean way either, just pulled up his bucket, sat down next to me, and showed me how to hook it through the collar so it stays put in the current. We sat there maybe an hour, he told me he'd been fishing that same spot since the 70s and that the smallies used to be way bigger before all the condo stuff went up along the river. I didn't catch anything that day but I've hooked a worm his way ever since, and honestly it works. It's weird what sticks with you, I couldn't tell you that guy's name but I still hear his voice every time I bait a hook. Now when I take my nephew down there I catch myself doing the same thing, just walking up to some kid and showing them the collar trick. Anyway, does anyone know if the walleye run at the river mouth is still worth going for in spring, or has it gotten too crowded now?
